Trauma-Informed Throughout

Trauma-informed care is not a 'check the box' process at Ananda—it's a way of being woven into our entire Continuity of CARE process. Our entire team is trained in somatic, trauma-informed plant medicine facilitation and integration, ensuring your ability to go deep with the medicine in a safe environment.

Sacred Reciprocity (Ayni)

At Ananda Lodge we aim to be a bridge, where not only sacred medicine practices are honored and upheld, but the indigenous healers we work with are cared for, uplifted, and supported through Ayni (sacred reciprocity efforts). We work with some of the most respected and powerful healers from the Shipibo tribe in the Peruvian Amazon.

Time Is Medicine

We believe that time is healing and time is medicine. Unlike retreats that rush you back home, our 8-day immersion provides the extra time post-ceremony to experience deep integration and nervous system healing. The medicine needs time to settle before you return to daily life.

The Medicine & Shipibo Tradition

San Pedro calls to those seeking heart-centered healing, body reconnection, and clarity on their path.

Ayahuasca (Oni)

At Ananda Lodge, we operate with the highest level of integrity when serving medicine. The ayahuasca brew for our retreats is prepared with sacred reverence and prayer, using only the vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and chacruna leaves (Psychotria viridis)—nothing else added.

The power of the icaros: Following many years of intense diets in the jungle, Shipibo healers are known as some of the most highly skilled energetic surgeons in the world. Through the singing of their icaros (sacred healing songs), the curandera channels their connection with the medicine and plant and animal spirits to heal traumatic imprints and energetic blockages. Through their singing, they guide the medicine to extract illness, repair the spirit, and harmonize the energy body.

The Shipibo-Conibo People

The Shipibo-Conibo are indigenous people who originate from the Peruvian Amazon. Formerly two groups (Shipibo and Conibo), they eventually merged to become one tribe—now known as some of the most powerful healers in the world. They are the third-largest indigenous group in the Peruvian Amazon, comprising 36,000 people across more than 150 communities.

The Shipibo Tribe is deeply rooted in their spiritual beliefs of healing with plants and their reverence for plant and animal spirits. They gain their healing powers and wisdom directly from the plants. Evident through their icaros (healing songs) and traditional textiles (kenes), the Shipibo believe in the concept of an all-encompassing reality of oneness. The kene plays a crucial role in bringing these concepts into tangible, physical form—often evident in the visuals experienced during ceremony.

Through their work with energy, they can cure a wide range of ailments, from physical to psycho-spiritual. The Shipibo follow a very specific progression of healing work that ensures the utmost safety, protection, and deepest access to removing trauma burdens and emotional imprints.

Your Compassionate Guides

Orfelinda Sanancino Cauper (Bawan Kater)

Kimberly Ocana

Shipibo Master Healer from Pullcalpa, Peru

Ananda Lodge is honored to welcome master healer Orfelinda from Pullcalpa, Peru. Her name in Shipibo is Bawan Kater. Orfelinda is a gentle and loving maestra who began drinking ayahuasca at age 20.

Orfelinda chose the path of a healer as that was the path of her grandfather. As a young child she watched him cure many sick people in their village and became very drawn to the plants and to the medicine. At the age of 10 she told her grandfather she wanted to be a master healer. He told her the path was not easy and that in order to follow this path she would need to do many years of plant medicine dietas.

Orfelinda has completed many year-long dietas to become a master healer. She is known for her deep medicine songs, her compassionate and loving spirit, and for her reverence to the plants and ayahuasca medicine. She is excited to join us at Ananda Lodge to share her medicine traditions and wisdom.

Understanding Ayahuasca

Have questions about ayahuasca and the Shipibo tradition? We’re here to support your journey with education and transparency.

Ayahuasca (Oni in Shipibo) is a sacred plant medicine brew made from the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and chacruna leaves (Psychotria viridis). It has been used for thousands of years by indigenous Amazonian cultures for healing and spiritual purposes. The medicine works on multiple levels—physical, emotional, and spiritual—helping to heal traumatic imprints, remove energetic blockages, and reconnect you with your inner healing intelligence. The true power comes from the combination of the medicine and the skilled Shipibo healer's icaros (sacred healing songs).

Shipibo healers undergo years—sometimes decades—of intensive plant dietas (strict isolation with specific plants) to gain their healing abilities. They are known as some of the most highly skilled energetic surgeons in the world. Through their icaros (sacred healing songs), they channel their connection with the medicine and plant and animal spirits to guide the medicine to extract illness, repair the spirit, and harmonize the energy body. The skill and mastery of the healer profoundly impacts the depth of healing possible.

Yes! This retreat is designed to support both first-time participants and those with previous ayahuasca experience. We provide extensive preparation (2 sessions before arrival), trauma-informed facilitation throughout, a 2:1 facilitator-to-guest ratio for personalized care, and comprehensive integration support. Our intimate group size of maximum 8 participants ensures you receive the attention and support needed for safe, deep healing work.

Ceremonies are held in the evening in a safe, sacred space. After drinking the medicine, you may experience heightened sensory perception, emotional release, visual imagery, deep introspection, and spiritual insights. The maestra will sing icaros throughout the ceremony to guide your healing. You may experience purging (vomiting, crying, or other releases) as the medicine clears blocked energy—this is a normal and important part of the healing process. Our experienced team is present throughout to support you. Effects typically last 4-6 hours.

Safety is our absolute priority. We maintain a maximum group size of 8 for personalized attention, provide comprehensive medical screening to check for contraindications, work with highly experienced Shipibo master healers, offer trauma-informed facilitation by a trained team (2:1 facilitator ratio), and include extensive preparation and integration support. Our medicine is brewed with the highest integrity using only ayahuasca vine and chacruna leaves—nothing else added. The intimate setting and experienced team ensure you can go deep with the medicine safely.
