What is Psilocybin?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in certain species of mushrooms that grow throughout forests and grasslands around the world. These fungi have been used ceremonially for generations by indigenous cultures, particularly in regions of Mexico and Central America, where they were traditionally referred to as "the flesh of the gods."

The mushrooms contain psychoactive compounds that interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, allowing the mind to enter a state of expanded awareness and perception. Effects usually begin within 20 to 60 minutes and can last four to six hours.

At Ananda Lodge, we offer a small-group psilocybin retreat in Costa Rica, where guided ceremonies take place in a safe and carefully supported environment. Our approach emphasizes trauma-informed facilitation, preparation before ceremony, and integration afterward, so guests can explore the medicine with clarity and support.

Psilocybin and emotional insight.

Psilocybin often works by softening rigid patterns of thought, letting emotions, memories, and insights surface in new ways.

Many people experience a sense of expanded perspective, able to see their lives, relationships, and personal narratives with greater compassion and clarity. Rather than overwhelming emotional intensity, psilocybin frequently works through introspection and insight, helping individuals recognize patterns that may be contributing to burnout, emotional numbness, or life transitions.

Clinical research has also explored psilocybin's potential for helping people work through depression, trauma, anxiety, and addiction when used in supportive ceremonial or therapeutic environments.

Because psilocybin experiences are often shorter and more reflective than some other plant medicines, many guests find it a gentle entry point into ceremonial work.

"The experience was so positive and life-changing. I will carry it, and many lessons with me, for the rest of my life. On top of that, the rooms, the view, and the pool were great. Trust your inner voice, be open to what is possible, and just let go! You will be amazed."

Common questions

Psilocybin, answered.

Is psilocybin safe?
Psilocybin can be safe when experienced in a carefully guided ceremonial setting with experienced facilitators. However, it is a powerful psychoactive medicine and is not appropriate for everyone. At Ananda Lodge, all guests complete a detailed health screening before attending a retreat, so our team can determine whether participation is safe and appropriate.
Who should not take psilocybin?
Psilocybin is not suitable for everyone. Certain medications, particularly some antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) and lithium, and a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder can make it unsafe. Our screening process reviews your medical and mental-health history together with you, so we can offer honest, personalized guidance before you commit.
What happens during a psilocybin ceremony?
Ceremonies are held in a calm, intentional setting and usually last four to six hours. You'll rest comfortably, often with eyeshades and music, as the medicine works through introspection and insight. Our facilitators are present the entire time to keep the space safe and supportive. Most retreats include three ceremonies across the week.
How should I prepare for a psilocybin retreat?
Preparation begins well before you arrive. We provide dietary and lifestyle guidance, suggestions for slowing down and setting intentions, and preparation calls with our team. Our downloadable preparation guide walks you through each step, so you arrive ready, grounded, and supported.
What happens after the retreat?
Integration is where much of the lasting change happens. After your retreat, we continue to support you with integration sessions and resources to help you translate insights into meaningful changes in daily life, gently, and at your own pace.
