What is San Pedro?

San Pedro, also known as Huachuma, is a sacred cactus medicine traditionally used by indigenous cultures throughout the Andes Mountains of South America. The cactus contains the psychoactive compound mescaline and has been used ceremonially for thousands of years by Andean healers, to support spiritual connection, emotional healing, and a deeper relationship with the natural world.

Unlike many other plant medicine ceremonies that take place at night, San Pedro ceremonies are usually held during the day. The medicine unfolds slowly over several hours and is often experienced outdoors, allowing participants to walk the land, sit with nature, and reflect within the rhythm of the day.

At Ananda Lodge, we offer small-group San Pedro ceremony retreats in Costa Rica, guided by an experienced huachumero and supported through trauma-informed facilitation, preparation guidance, and integration afterward. San Pedro is often described as a heart-opening medicine, helping people reconnect with themselves, with others, and with the living world around them.

San Pedro and emotional healing.

San Pedro works differently from many other psychedelic medicines.

Rather than guiding people into intense inner visions, the cactus medicine often opens emotional awareness and connection to the present moment. Many guests describe feeling grounded, calm, and deeply connected to nature during a huachuma ceremony, the experience can soften emotional defenses and allow feelings such as grief, gratitude, compassion, or forgiveness to surface naturally.

For some people, San Pedro helps illuminate long-standing emotional patterns or life transitions. Others experience a renewed sense of direction or purpose, often accompanied by a deeper appreciation for relationships, community, and the natural world.

Because of its stabilizing and heart-centered qualities, some guests find San Pedro a gentler introduction to ceremonial plant medicine, especially for those seeking emotional clarity and connection rather than intense visionary work.

San Pedro's indigenous history.

Huachuma has been used ceremonially for over 3,000 years, among the Chavín culture of Peru. Stone carvings, ancient temples, and oral traditions show that San Pedro was a bridge between worlds, helping humans connect with spirit, nature, and self.

We honor the Indigenous lineages that preserved these healing San Pedro ceremony traditions. San Pedro is a teacher rooted in reverence, intention, and connection.

Our ceremonies are held in alignment with that lineage, while integrating modern trauma-informed care to ensure your full safety and sovereignty.

A guided ceremony

A guided San Pedro retreat experience.

Our San Pedro retreat in Costa Rica is designed to allow the medicine to unfold slowly and naturally, in a supportive environment.

  • Guided San Pedro ceremonies led by an experienced huachumero
  • Small-group retreats with a maximum of eight guests
  • Preparation guidance before the retreat
  • Trauma-informed facilitation throughout the experience
  • Integration support to help process insights afterward
  • A peaceful jungle setting with private rooms, nourishing meals, and ocean views

San Pedro journeys often include time spent outdoors, walking the land, sitting quietly in nature, and sitting with self. This slower rhythm allows guests to connect with the medicine while staying grounded in the natural environment. Most retreats include three ceremonies during the week, giving guests time to deepen the experience while integrating insights between sessions.

"I attended Ananda for a weekend Huachuma retreat and had a really great experience. It's a family-owned center and they make you feel right at home and supported in your journey. The accommodations are beautiful and the grounds were situated in beautiful Costa Rican nature. The retreats are intentionally kept to small groups, and the center itself seems to be run in a very ethical way. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a plant medicine retreat."

"I've had a few experiences with retreats but this might be my favorite! The accommodation is luxurious and new and very comfortable, just beautiful! The Huachumero Chase is one of the kindest, most humble, and most competent teachers I've worked with. It was easy to feel safe and to trust the people and the medicine."

Common questions

San Pedro, answered.

Is San Pedro safe?
San Pedro can be safe when experienced in a carefully guided ceremonial setting with experienced facilitators. However, it is a powerful psychoactive medicine and is not appropriate for everyone. At Ananda Lodge, all guests complete a detailed health screening before attending a retreat, so our team can determine whether participation is safe and appropriate.
Who should not take San Pedro?
San Pedro is not suitable for everyone. Certain medications, particularly some antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) and MAOIs, along with some heart conditions or a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder, can make it unsafe. Our screening process reviews your medical and mental-health history together with you, so we can offer honest, personalized guidance before you commit.
What happens during a San Pedro ceremony?
San Pedro ceremonies are usually held during the day and unfold slowly over several hours, guided by an experienced huachumero. Much of the journey happens outdoors, walking the land, resting in nature, and reflecting. Our facilitators are present throughout to keep the space safe and supportive.
How should I prepare for a San Pedro retreat?
Preparation begins well before you arrive. We provide dietary and lifestyle guidance, suggestions for slowing down and setting intentions, and preparation calls with our team. Our downloadable preparation guide walks you through each step, so you arrive ready, grounded, and supported.
What happens after the retreat?
Integration is where much of the lasting change happens. After your retreat, we continue to support you with integration sessions and resources to help you carry the insights into everyday life, gently, and at your own pace.
