"The experience was so positive and life-changing, I will carry it and many lessons with me for the rest of my life. On top of that, the rooms, the view, and the pool were great. Trust your inner voice, be open to what is possible, and just let go! You will be amazed."

What's it like to take Psilocybin?

A psilocybin journey is often described as a deep remembering, a re-connection with your essence. Sensory perception may shift. Inner visions may appear. Emotions may surface.

But above all, a felt sense of clarity and compassion begins to emerge as if a veil has lifted, and light floods in.

At Ananda Lodge Costa Rica pysilocybin retreat, your safety and care come first. Our C.A.R.E. philosophy (Compassion, Attunement, Reverence, Embodiment) ensures you are fully supported before, during, and after the ceremony.

Small group sizes (no more than 8), highly trained facilitators, and personalized guidance help you feel truly held.

Where does Psilocybin come from?

Psilocybin is the active compound in over 200 species of sacred mushrooms, used ceremonially for thousands of years. At Ananda Lodge, we use carefully selected strains grown and prepared with reverence for both tradition and safety.

Mushrooms are typically consumed as a tea or in capsule form to ease digestion. Effects begin within 20–60 minutes and can last 4–6 hours. We work closely with each guest to tailor their experience to what’s right for them.

As the light of the medicine enters, it refracts through the unique prism of your mind — revealing what’s ready to be seen.

"The psilocybin retreat at Costa Rica's Ananda was an excellent experience. The schedule was thoughtfully organized, gradually introducing the process in a way that felt safe and reassuring. It was evident that the staff and leadership put significant effort into doing everything the right way."

Psilocybin's Indigenous History

Psilocybin mushrooms have guided human healing for millennia. The earliest evidence dates back to 10,000 BCE, with ceremonial use spanning Aztec, Mayan, and modern Mazatec cultures.

One of the most revered stewards was María Sabina, a Mazatec sabia (wise woman) healer who shared sacred mushroom ceremony with the ethnomycologist, Gordon Wasson, and introduced mushrooms to the Western world. This led to her many unwanted visitors looking for her and her ostracization from her community. Her story reminds us of the respect we must have for this plant.

At Ananda Lodge Costa Rica’s psilocybin retreat, we honor these lineages with deep reverence and prayer. Every ceremony begins with gratitude for the traditions and people who kept this light alive.

Is Psilocybin Right For You?

Don’t just take our word for it; Psilocybin can offer positive experiences, but it’s powerful and can be potentially challenging.

Please use it in a safe setting with experienced facilitators. It is not suitable for everyone, especially those with certain medical or psychological conditions.

Here are a few things to think about:

Physical Health

Psilocybin is not recommended for individuals with severe cardiovascular issues, glaucoma, severe hypertension, recent fractures or surgeries, acute infectious diseases, epilepsy, or seizures. Psilocybin can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure, so it’s not recommended if you have heart issues such as uncontrolled hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or aneurysms.

If you have anger management problems, or active suicidal or homicidal ideation, psilocybin is not recommended. If you’ve had previous suicide attempts that required hospitalization, you must understand that psilocybin can amplify certain thoughts, and may not be the best fit.

It is also contraindicated for pregnant or nursing individuals.

Individuals with severe psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorder should not use psilocybin. Those with a history of severe depression, suicidal tendencies, or self-harm should consult with a healthcare professional before participating.

It’s important to remember that psilocybin should not be taken with certain medications or substances that affect the serotonergic system, as this can cause dangerous interactions. These include some types of antidepressants (especially MAOIs and SSRIs), antipsychotics, and other psychotropic drugs. Participants should feel informed and responsible to disclose all medications and substances they are currently using to the facilitators to ensure their safety.
