Ayahuasca Retreat Costa Rica
ANCIENT ORIGINS

In the intricate tapestry of entheogenic experiences, few hold Ayahuasca’s cultural and spiritual capacity. As we embark on this exploration, we invite you to honor the ancient wisdom and cultural nuances shaping this extraordinary journey. In doing so, we glean insights into its potential for personal growth and healing and pay homage to the enduring spirit of indigenous communities whose legacy is woven into every drop of this sacred medicine.

What Is Ayahuasca? It is referred to as the “Vine of the Spirit” or “Vine of the Soul,” derives its name from the Quechuan languages of the Andean region. The term combines “aya,” signifying the spirit or the otherworldly, and “huasca,” which translates to vine or rope.

This powerful medicine has been utilized for centuries by indigenous communities living in the Amazon basin across countries like Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador. Its name and mixture may vary depending on the specific user and the region in South America, going by Yagé, Daime, Caapi, Nixipãe, Uni, Oni, and Kamarampi.

"What is Ayahuasca?

"Ayahuasca is found in origin histories for all our peoples. For our civilizations, this sacred medicine has been the source of our knowledge, identity, and culture since the creation of the first person. Consequently, it is always present in our songs and histories, as well as being part of the ancient relations between our peoples."

What Is Ayahuasca? The Medicine

So what is Ayahuasca – A potent psychoactive brew, is prepared by combining two plants: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine (Ayahuasca Vine) and the Psychotria Viridis (Chacruna) leaves containing DMT. The process involves harvesting and breaking down the B. caapi vine, which is then boiled in a large pot. After simmering over a fire, the Chacruna plant is added, and the mixture continues to simmer for hours or days until it thickens into the ceremonial medicine.

The B. caapi vine is crucial for its high content of harmala alkaloids. These potent MAO inhibitors enable the oral activation of the DMT in the Chacruna plant by preventing swift breakdown by digestive enzymes. When consumed alone, Chacruna’s DMT is deactivated by our MAO enzyme system, resulting in no noticeable effect. The MAO inhibitors in the B. caapi vine serve as the catalyst that synergizes these plants into a powerful and transformative psychoactive tea.
